WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) introduced the Real Estate Reciprocity Act, a bill that stops foreign nationals from buying American land if their home countries refuse to let Americans do the same. The legislation puts a 50% tax on real estate purchases by individuals and companies from these nations and forces full disclosure of foreign ownership to the IRS.
“While American families are being priced out of their own communities, hostile regimes are buying land with cash and zero accountability,” said Congressman Harrigan. “If Americans can’t buy land in your country, you don’t get to buy land in ours. It’s common sense and long overdue.”
Foreign adversaries have exploited loopholes to quietly acquire farmland, homes, and property near U.S. military installations. Meanwhile, countries like China, Iran, and others restrict American citizens from purchasing land within their borders. This bill ends the double standard by requiring the State Department to name countries that block U.S. land ownership, applying steep taxes to buyers from those nations, and mandating full transparency in all foreign real estate deals.
Congressman Harrigan is calling on Congress to swiftly pass the Real Estate Reciprocity Act and put American land and American citizens first. The United States will no longer be for sale to regimes that refuse to play by the same rules.
