WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted in favor of the House amendment to S. 1383, legislation known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act), which strengthens federal election safeguards by requiring documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
“Election integrity should be the easiest issue in American politics,” said Congressman Harrigan. “Only U.S. citizens should be voting in U.S. elections, and 83% of Americans agree, including 71% of Democrats. This is about basic trust in the system. People expect clear rules, real verification, and accountability. If Democrats decide to oppose this, they’re not standing up for voters, they’re turning their backs on what the overwhelming majority of their own base already supports.”
The SAVE Act updates the National Voter Registration Act by establishing clear, uniform requirements for proving U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. The legislation defines acceptable documentation, strengthens verification tools available to election officials, closes existing loopholes in the registration process, and preserves access for lawful voters through provisional ballot protections.
Following House passage, the House amendment to S. 1383 now returns to the Senate for further consideration before any final legislation can be sent to the President.
