WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted to pass H.R. 35, the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act. This bill strengthens protections for law enforcement by imposing severe criminal and immigration penalties on those who intentionally flee from federal officers while operating a vehicle.

“Fleeing from law enforcement is a blatant assault on the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. This bill makes it clear—if you flee, you will face the full force of the law,” said Congressman Harrigan. “We cannot tolerate anyone who endangers the lives of our officers, especially when they’re securing our borders and protecting communities across the nation.”

The Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act establishes escalating penalties for evading arrest, including up to 2 years in prison, with harsher sentences if serious injury or death results. The bill also mandates that individuals convicted under this law be inadmissible to the U.S., deportable, and ineligible for relief under immigration laws.

Congressman Harrigan is urging the Senate to act swiftly and pass this important legislation to ensure law enforcement officers are properly protected and criminals are held accountable.
