WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted to pass H.R. 224, the Disabled Veterans Housing Support Act, ensuring that disabled veterans are not unfairly penalized when applying for housing assistance.
“In Western North Carolina, we take care of our own—especially the men and women who wore the uniform and sacrificed for this nation,” said Congressman Harrigan. “No disabled veteran should be denied a roof over their head because Washington bureaucrats count their earned benefits against them. This bill delivers real relief to veterans in our district and across the country, ensuring they get the support they deserve—without unnecessary red tape standing in the way.”
The Disabled Veterans Housing Support Act amends the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 to exclude service-connected disability compensation from income calculations when determining eligibility for HUD’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. It also mandates a federal review to identify inconsistencies in how disability benefits are treated across HUD programs, ensuring greater fairness and consistency.
This legislation is particularly significant for Purple Heart Homes, a Statesville-based organization that provides critical housing solutions for disabled veterans. Congressman Harrigan is urging the Senate to swiftly pass this bill to deliver long-overdue relief to America’s heroes.
