WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted to pass H.R. 22, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This legislation ensures that only American citizens can register to vote and requires states to remove noncitizens from their voter rolls.
“Our elections are for American citizens, and the SAVE Act makes sure it stays that way,” said Congressman Harrigan. “This bill protects every legal vote with commonsense safeguards. Anyone claiming it blocks access to the ballot is not being honest. There are more than six ways to prove citizenship, including a REAL ID, passport, or government-issued photo ID. It keeps the system secure without making it harder to vote. If someone says otherwise, they are pushing a political agenda and counting on you not to read the bill.”
The SAVE Act codifies President Trump’s executive order on voter registration and gives states the tools to verify citizenship before registering voters. It also requires regular audits to remove noncitizens from the rolls. The idea is simple: only citizens should vote in American elections.
Congressman Harrigan is calling on the Senate to pass the SAVE Act and help restore trust in the election system by protecting the integrity of every legal ballot.
